A passionate man and artist, creative genius Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) often sensually immortalized the women he loved in his work.
In “At Rest,” that energy and abandon is compellingly conveyed in vibrant colors and fluid lines that defy artistic convention. Astoundingly prolific, Picasso co-founded Cubism and vastly influenced 20th century art, producing 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures.
The first job that Pablo Picasso was to be paid upon was with his landlord/art dealer, Pere Menach. The agreed-upon sum was 150 francs per month, which in today's money, equates to about $750 USD. Not a bad sum of money back in the day and one that allowed young Pablo to exercise his creativity and to develop his personal characteristics, that would carry him through the rest of his long life.
The model for Picasso's The Rest was his mistress of that period, Marie-Thérèse Walter. She is portrayed in many of his paintings, the most famous one being Le Reve. In spite of the non-realistic treatment of his portraits, we can easily identify the model. Take a look at Marie-Thérèse Walter's photograph and you will understand.Amazing, the likeness, isn't it?
Going by my theory of every artist painting a self-portrait everytime, these portrayals of Marie-Thérèse Walter also contains the painter himself, therefore symbolises the fusion of the two, the relationship between them. The Rest is the rest after the union. |
