The English painter Edward Hughes was the nephew of painter Arthur Hughes and a studio assistant to pre-raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt. Hughes paintings were done primarily in watercolor and gauche, with his themes oftenleaning towards Symbolism. A student of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, his work displays a careful attention to detail and keen observation of nature. Edward Robert Hughes was a brilliant Pre-Raphaelite artist who produced exhibition-quality studies.
Hughes (1849 – 1914) belonged to several prestigious art societies, and depicted mystical, Shakespearean and Italian literary themes with rich golds, blues and sheer fabrics. His nudes, which were highly erotic, also brought him acclaim. Hughes helped renowned painter William Holman Hunt finish several paintings when the elderly artist began losing his sight. He helped Hunt with some of his later work, including the St Paul's version of The Light of the World. Hughes began his career among the Pre-Raphaelites, and like Edward Burne-Jones with whom he was acquainted, he inclined towards Symbolism. However, the majority of Hughes' work, carried out mainly in watercolour/gouache, displays the meticulous observation of nature and minute technique associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
