Cafe Terrace at Night, also known as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, is a painting by the Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh which was done in Arles, France in September 1888. After moving to Paris, he discovered color as well as divisionist ideas which led him to create his signature dashed brushstrokes that became prevalent in his later work. After he was voluntarily accepted into an insane asylum, his style became increasingly agitated and his dashes were increasingly used in swirling and twisted shapes, which were often seen as symbolic of his mental state. Today it has been carefully recreated detail by detail, color by color to near perfection. Depicting a cafe in Arles, then Cafe Terrace and today it is called Cafe Van Gogh. The style of the painting is unique to Van Gogh with warm colors and depth of perspective. This is the first example of Van Gogh using star filled backgrounds in his work. He went on to paint such night skies in Starry Night Over the Rhone, painted the same month, and the better known Starry Night a year later.
Vincent Van Gogh's restless spirit and depressive mental state fired his artistic work with great joy and, sadly, equally great despair. Known as a prolific Post-Impressionist, he produced many oil paintings that were heavily biographical. This work of art has the same emotions and beauty as the original by Van Gogh. Why not grace your home with this reproduced masterpiece? It is sure to bring many admirers!
Regarding his oil paintings Van Gogh said "Although I find myself in financial difficulties, I nevertheless have the feeling that there is nothing more solid than a `handicraft' in the literal sense of working with one's hands. If you became a painter, one of the things that would surprise you is that painting and everything connected with it is quite hard work in physical terms. Leaving aside the mental exertion, the hard thought, it demands considerable physical effort, and that day after day.” During his lifetime Van Gogh was never famous as a painter and struggled to make a living as an artist. Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime The Red Vineyard. This painting sold in Brussels for 400 Francs only a few months before his death. Vincent van Gogh died at the age of 37 bringing his career as a painter to an end, but beginning his legacy as the great painter of the future who inspired the world.
